Shri Puttur Narasimha Nayak - performance at GSB Mulund Datta Jayanti function

GSB sabha Mulund celebrated its Golden Jubilee Datta Jayanti function on the 22nd and 23rd of December. It was marked with a Sita Kalyan function and a grand performance by Shri Puttur Narasimha Nayak and Shri Kiran Kamath.

It's a great pleasure to present two video clips of what GSB devotional musiclovers yearn to hear - The soul enriching voice of Shri Puttur Narasimha Nayak rendering the Dasara Padagalu and Konkani Bhajans.

Radio Idli and all the listeners, i am sure, will be ever grateful to him for granting us his kind permission to share the magic of his performance over the Internet. I hope our bandhavas spread all over the world will love this experience, the remembrance of which gives me goosebumps even today!

I would like to convey my heartfilled thanks to GSB sabha Mulund who supported me whole heartedly at the event, to record it and share it with all.

I now hold back my excitement filled words to share the real joy of hearing Nayak-maam:

1) Pavamaana Jagada Praana

The immortal words of Vijaya-Daasa speaking of Lord Hanuman rendered with an evergreen musical composition by Narasimha Nayakmaam:

2) Nartana Priye Tu Narayani

Nayakmaam sings a beautiful bhajan to the Mohini Incarnation of Lord Vishnu, a manifestation of beauty and art in its most perfect form. For many GSBs (s)he is a Kuladevi too! Jai Mahalasa Narayani!

With lots of Joy for the new year, I leave you all with the delight of hearing these great performances. The songs above are just a part of a larger concert. I look forth to sharing the same during the new year!

With Best wishes, Stay tuned and Stay beautiful!

Kannada Twist

After migrating from the Saraswati River Banks and then from Goa, Karnataka has been a home and a center for many Saraswat families for the last few generations.

We have in this edition, two beautiful songs by two very talented singers from the Radio Idli family.

Balachandra Prabhu

Those who have heard this upcoming prodigy in the previous post, would be waiting to hear from him yet again. Balachandra returns after winning an award from the All India Radio, standing first in a National Competition. He is now an All India Radio artist!

We all cheered him and enthusiastically he returns with a very clear recording from a live concert at the Death Anniversary of Marahoom Abdul Karim Khan Sahab of the Kirana Gharana fame.

Balachandra presents to us a beautiful Kannada song composed by the great Purandaradasa.

Radio Idli Rising Artists : Prodigy Pundit : Balachandra Prabhu

Balachandra Prabhu

Based in the musical town of Hubli and a dedicated student of the Kirana Gharana, Balachandra brings to us the rich flavours of Hindustani Classical music.

Born in Belthangady a place in south canara on 14th October 1985, Balachandra took his initial lessons of Hindustani classical vocal from his father. Further from Shri Jayateerth Mevundi for 3 years and at present he is under the able guidance of the renowned Kirana gharana vocalist, Pandit Shripati Padigar who is a senior disciple of great vocalist of India Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Honorable artiste Dr. Gangubai Hangal and many other senior artistes appreciated his music and blessed him for his career. Recently he performed at Abdul Karim Khan Music Festival, where he received recognition and encouragement from the most discerning people.

His achievements include the Thamankar Award, 2006 and the Pratibha Puraskar scholarship from the Karnataka Sangeeta Nritya Academy.

We have here a live recording of his recent concert. Two amazing Abhangs with the finest play with Swaras. Kindly excuse the quality of the recordign which has been done through a mobile phone, which however doesnt diminish the quality of Bala's voice in it!(please click the widget below to play)

With immense dedication, devotion and practice Balachandra aspires for a successful career in music. I would request each listener to help an upcoming artist like Balachandra, by refering him to organizations that hold concerts to encourage and preserve our rich art.

With his first post, let us all wish Balachandra all the very best for his future. I am sure all of us would await for more of his recordings!

NaKSAtra 2007 - Annual cultural extravaganza

I have been postponing the uploading of these links for a long time now. My apologies are due on this front. This year as usual the Kanara Saraswat Association organised its event and there was a tremendous response. This is the same stage where great artistes like Pt.Ravishankar have done their earlier performances and the association has a reputation of being patrons of indian music.

We are posting some of the best performances here on radio idli.

Sunil Kamath won the first prize for his rendition of jiya dhadak Dhadak in the light music category which is an open event without any restrictions on age groups.

Sunil Kamath has in fact been one of the regular contributors to our radio idli blog and his talent has been well appreciated.

Esha Hoskote has been one of the more talented youngsters living in Talmakiwadi and her talent is there for all to see. This vocal performance is just one facet of her talent.

Abhang Gulvady: Abhang is not new to radio idli circles. He has been voted the most popular member of the idli group and is a proficient tabla player. This time however along with doing the official tabla players duty for the competition Abhang decided to exhibit his skills at singing.

Prajakta Shanbhag: Her rendition of the song payoji maine ram ratan dhan paayo was good enough for her to win a prize in the devotional songs competition this year. Do I need to say anything more than this.............

Kalyani Hemmady: This school going girl has been getting trained in classical music from the great Pandit Murli Manohar Shukla maam another great saraswat. Her control over the sur, the lay and the taal is a reflection of her proficiency in the art of singing.

Sunil Kamath again !!

Sunil Kamath also participated in the devotional singing competition where he made a star performance but could not win a prize due to the quality of the performance.

Nagesh Pai : Our own Nagesh pai is not a mean singer either. His choice of the bhajan Vrindavani Venu was also very apt for the competition. The tonal quality of his voice and his feel of the song was good enough for this performance to be rated amongst the star performances for the evening.

Kaivalya Nadkarni: Kaivalya Nadkarni is also a school going girl with a great voice and is getting trained in classical music. No wonder that at this age she could enthrall the crowd with her bhajan and won a prize in her age group for the devotional music competition.

Dhruv Dhareshwar : Both of Dhruvs parents are accomplished musicians in their own right. However Dhruv is very young ( all of 5 years) yet he had the guts to go on stage and sing this song for the devotional music competition.

His style and composure on stage even at this tender age is a sight to behold and is sure to grow up into a showman.

Vaishnavi Balwalli Vaishnavi is one more of the talents that is growing up in Talmakiwadi and had the whole audience enthralled with her bhajan that we are uploading for your pleasure.

Rupak Vaze: Yes the song that he sung was not in the rupak taal but he made the audience wave to his tunes. His performance was again one of the star performances for the evening.

The filming has been done on a VHS camera and hence the quality of the output is not that great. We apologise for the same. Also there would be certain sounds of the audience etc in the background. But we are sure that since we are a group of amateurs doing voluntary efforts, the same would be accepted.

We have endeavoured to make radio idli great for all its listeners and keen followers of the concept. There have been many people working overtime to collect content for the whole show and for this effort to go on smoothly without any huge gaps. However, since this KSA event was my home event I am uploading the same personally as this is an emotional issue for me and I have been personally involved in the organizing of the event successfully. We thank the Kanara Saraswat Association (KSA) for supporting our endeavour and permitting us to use the clippings of the event on radio idli.

Kanara Saraswat Association is the premier socio cultural organisation of the Chitrapur saraswat community and is based in Talmakiwadi. It has always been in the forefront of encouraging hindustani classical music and also other cultural causes like the Konkani literature etc. KSA is organising a week long Konkani Sahitya saptaha slated to be held sometime in May 2008 in Mumbai and we look forward to everyones cooperation in making this huge event a success. We shall post more details of the same as and when we receive them.

The 24th Edition

Hi all,

First of all lemme begin by congratulating that our beloved Chief Editor Nagesh Pai and his wife Varsha Pai ( no longer - "soon to be Pai" ;-) ) on their marriage, on behalf of the whole of Radio Idli.

Where as I am expressing this in simple words, someone else wants to do it in better style.
Archana dedicates a lovely romantic song to the newly married couple..

Jab koi arch1_new....

Thanks Archu, I am sure Nagesh and Varsha will cherish it for lifetime.

Bhavya

This seems to be a week of the nightingales. This one is from Bhavya Prabhu of Mangalore, The Princess of Melodies..

Bole re Papi Hara....

Reshma
After the two oriental Nightingales, comes the turn of the Nightingale from the west. Reshma sings out a Basavanna's Vachana. Basavanna was a popular 12th century poet and a spiritual leader from Bijapur, Karnataka, also known to be the originator of Lingayatism.. His Vachanas were simple poems aimed at teaching the public with moral values. Is this Vachana, Basavanna requests his God "Kudalasangama Deva" to treat his own body as a temple, as he does not have the riches to construct a temple for worship like the wealthy do !

Ullavaru Shivaalay...

Sooraj
Some male touch to the edition too ! Sooraj tries out a Yesudas special..

Jab Deep Jale Aana...

Nitin
And to finish it all, the Prabhu brothers Ashwin and Nitin with a Bhajana, Nitin with the voice, Ashwin with the taal..

utha.mp3

That's all we have for this edition. Have a great weekend and the week ahead !

Sunnyboy.
