The Southern Samba(r)

Hi Guys,

After a nice rest last week, Southern Samba(r) is back again.. But not with much to offer. The veterans seemed to have gone missing.. Where's the DJ? Where's the quizmaster? Exam fever? Work Overload? Maybe I ll request Inspector Lokabhiraaman ( for those who dont know, he is the southern version of Lokabhiraam ; ) , perhaps bachpan mein Kumbh ke mele mein kho gaye the :P ) to organize for a search squad for these 'Pooof'ed heroes.

However the show shall continue..

Sunny switches on the romantic button again..

It's nice to get romantic every now and then.. Arre Hindi se bore ho gaye, to angrezi hi sahi.. Yenu heluttira? ;) Sooraj sings his heart out in the Glen Medioros all time hit..

Nitin Prabhu too catches the love in the air

Aila.. Nitin Prabu bhi romantic ho gaya?? Is something or perhaps SOMEONE raiding the hearts of South India.. To find out I listened to Nitin's song.. But he too has no clue.. or perhaps he is playing safe, by not mentioning any name ;). Check out yourselves !!!

The Southern Samba(r)

Hi all..

So what if Southern Samba(r) has come with a delay, lemme tell you, it's come with lot more action. Had I uploaded on Saturday, I would have had only contribution to entertain you. But during the weekends, a few hands shot up and rose to the occasion, to make the Samba(r) as delicious as it'e ever been.

First of all, I would like to announce that to give more time to our friends to answer the quiz and to give more time to the quiz-master himself to prepare the quiz, our audio quiz DHUN will henceforth be bi-weekly. But worry not, it will still be as exciting, and none of the partcipants will go unrewarded.. because not only will DHUN now be a bi-weekly quiz, but it will also be a point based league !! Meaning the points you score every week hence forth will add up to your tally and you shall be seeing your name in a league table !! So do hurry up and send in your answers, even if you know only one or two. Coz every answer will make a difference to your standings!

The Taala Veena

Opening the innings for the South Zone, is a lady. Introducing debutant Veena Gopal with a konkani prayer that will sooth your nerves..

Sunny ko kuch.. Kehna Hai
After the momentum has been set up, it is now time to steady the innings with someone to play the sheet anchor role. And who better to do this job than the experienced RI campigner Sooraj Kamath himself ;-)

Kehna Hai.mp3

Nikhil Rao
Its the slog overs now and we have the right person to repeatedly send the ball into the stands and turn the crowd crazy.. Nikhil Rao providing the finishing touch to the innings with a cameo..

aadat! nikhils.mp3

So that brings us to the end of this innings of Southern Samba(r), please keep tuned in to catch our "Extra Innings" without Mandira Bedi ;-)

Quizmaster Vivekanand! presents Dhun

We all live a life of purpose. We identify what we want in life, set goals and chase them. Some of us want to be in responsible positions of recognized corporations, some of us want to become sportsmen, musicians, singers and the list goes on. Whatever we aim to be, there is one thing common to all of us. i.e. We aspire..

Today I would like to introduce you to one of my friends who aspires to be a quizzer. Vivekanand Shenoy, from Mangalore, is an engineer from NITK, Surathkal ( formerly known as KREC) and is currently working with Juniper Networks. He started as an amateur participant in quizzes in Canara PU College. Later on with the taste of success, Vivek started consistently participating in quizzes. He was an active member of quiz club of NITK college and the Mangalore Quizzing Foundation (MQF). As part of a trio team known as “King Murphy”, which is very popular in these regions, Vivek won various quizzes at inter-college fests i.e. 3 times at Incident (KREC), 2 times at Revels (MIT) and once at REC Calicut. Vivek has also conducted numerous quizzes at KREC and also at Atlantis (KMC).

After playing the role of a participant in quizzes, with the confidence and backup of his success, Vivek now wants to assume the role of a quiz conductor. He has already taken a head-start in this direction by conducting quizzes in corporations such as Huawei Technologies, Lucent Technologies and Juniper Networks during their annual functions.

Today with the help of Vivek, I am launching a new audio quizzing program in Radio Idli called “DHUN”. I thank Vivek for his interest to contribute towards Radio Idli and on behalf of Radio Idli, I wish him all the best in the future. Let us hope we get to see Vivek onTV on the same ranks of Derek O’Brien and Siddharth Basu.

Most answers will be at the tip of your tongue, but you still need to pen them down and send them to me at sooraj.kamath@gmail.com . The person with the maximum number of answers will be the winner and will be proclaimed "Radio-Guru of the Week"

We request all of you to play this quiz in the right spirit of the contest. Hence please do not mention any answers in the comments section of this blog or anywhere else in radio idli. So now let us begin..

Launching Southern Samba(r).. (south india special

The "Unconquered South" - perhaps the smallest cultural subcontinent on earth. 4 states hosting about 9 languages, home to the Carnatic classical music, dance forms like Kattakalli, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohinyattam, and the deadliest martial art on earth - the Kalarippayattu, breeds an ecstatic passion for lifetime.

Surely the South is only a subset of the vast cultural heritage of India. But yet, despite of the difference in its roots of origin, South Indian music is complete and as rich as any other music in the world.

With a Saraswat perspective, we have our brethren right from Karwar in Karnataka to Kochi and the rest of Kerala. Our culture blends very well with that of the regions and hence we have beauty in diversity!

Rightly so, Radio Idli recognizes this uniqueness of South India and reflects this in a special South Indian edition henceforth.

So presenting to you, the Southern Samba-r as a topping on your delicious Idli..

Neetha Shenoy

Lets begin with the blessings of God. So presenting first we have from God's own country Kerala, Neetha Shenoy from Kochi. Neetha happens to be the elder sister of Amitha who has won quite a bit of recognition from her contributions earlier this year

It's the time of the DJ dazzlers now. But for a change it is not our established DJ Deepak, but a debutant DJ Shashank Pai from Mangalore. He presents a Bhangda version of "Teri to yaad sataave"

Deepak

Lets take a break from DJgiri. Deepak is not only a DJ but also a melodious singer. I had first listened to his singing in an orkut meet of Konkanis in Bangalore. He had sung "Yaaron Dosti" much to the amazement and delight of about an audience of 40. Deepak shares with us his voice through a song he had sung in college
